a common rule of thumb is about 10 watts per square foot for a room with 8-foot ceilings, more for tall ceilings or a drafty room. That means a 1,500W heater, the most a standard U.S. outlet can run, warms roughly 150 square feet on its own. Under 50 square feet (a desk, a small bathroom), a 500W mini heater is enough. For bedrooms, an oil-filled radiator is quieter and gentler.

The 10 watts per square foot rule
Heater makers and retailers use a simple rule: about 10 watts of heat for every square foot of room, assuming normal 8-foot ceilings and average insulation. A 12 × 12 ft bedroom is 144 square feet, so it needs about 1,440W, which is right at the limit of a single plug-in heater.
The limit matters. Almost every portable electric heater in the U.S. maxes out at 1,500W because that is what a standard 15-amp, 120-volt circuit can run safely. A “large room” heater is not more powerful; it just spreads the same 1,500W differently. In the rentals I manage, tenants who complain that a heater “does nothing” almost always have a room twice that size or a heater on low.

How many watts does your room need?
Which type for which room
| Room | Size | Best type |
|---|---|---|
| Under the desk, small bathroom | Up to 50 sq ft | 500W ceramic mini heater |
| Bedroom, home office | 100–150 sq ft | 1,500W oil-filled radiator (silent) or ceramic tower |
| Living room | 150–300 sq ft | 1,500W tower for the area where you sit; it will not heat the whole room |
| Open plan, over 300 sq ft | Large | Use central heat; a space heater only warms one zone |
Running two 1,500W heaters on the same circuit is the classic way to trip a breaker; see why a space heater trips the breaker. And before you buy, check what it costs per hour with our space heater cost guide.
Heaters by room size
| Pick | Why | What owners complain about |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom, quiet Amazon Basics Oil-Filled Radiator, 7 fins | No exposed elements, a top handle and silent heat. One owner reports it keeps a 12 × 20 room at 70°F on medium. | Mixed on output and speed: some say it only runs at about 900W on lower settings and takes a while to heat up. Radiators are slow by design. |
| Bedroom, premium De’Longhi Oil-Filled Radiator, 1,500W | Dead quiet and good for small rooms. The longtime favorite in this category. | Reliability and controls are mixed: some owners had units stop randomly, and some find the temperature settings vague. |
| Office or living area DREO Space Heater with Thermostat, 1,500W | Heats quickly, quiet, compact and has a remote. Shuts off when it reaches the set temperature. | Some owners say it stopped working suddenly; value opinions are split. |
| Circulates the room Vornado MVH Whole Room Space Heater | Vornado’s vortex fan moves warm air around the room instead of just in front of the heater. Owners say it heats a small space fast. | Mixed on output: some owners find the air lukewarm on high. Best in a closed room, not a drafty garage. |
| Living room Lasko 751320 Ceramic Tower, 1,500W | Fast heat, quiet, remote with timer. A reliable classic for the spot by the sofa. | The thermostat moves in 5-degree steps, and several owners say it stopped working early. Register the warranty. |

Safety basics
- Plug the heater straight into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension cord.
- Keep it at least 3 feet from beds, curtains and anything that can burn, the distance fire-safety groups and most heater manuals give.
- Choose a model with tip-over and overheat protection and a safety certification mark (UL, ETL or CSA).
- Turn it off when you leave the room or go to sleep, unless it is designed for unattended use.
FAQ
How many square feet will a 1500 watt heater heat?
Using the common 10 watts per square foot rule, about 150 square feet with 8-foot ceilings and average insulation. Less in a drafty room or one with tall ceilings.
Is a bigger space heater more powerful?
Usually not. Most U.S. plug-in heaters max out at 1,500W. A larger heater spreads the heat differently, but the heat output is the same.
What size heater for a 10x12 room?
A 10 × 12 room is 120 square feet, so about 1,200W. One 1,500W heater is enough; an oil-filled radiator is a good quiet choice for a bedroom.
Can I use two space heaters in one room?
Only if they are on different circuits. Two 1,500W heaters on one 15-amp circuit will usually trip the breaker.
Should a space heater be plugged into a power strip?
No. Plug it directly into a wall outlet. Power strips and extension cords can overheat.
