3M vs Duck Window Insulation Kit: Which Shrink Film Should You Buy?

Both kits work the same way: tape, film, hair dryer. The differences are in the tape, the film thickness and how many windows a box covers. A kit calculator and the install steps that make either one hold all winter.

Plastic window film is the cheapest draft fix I know, and I’ve used it in rentals while waiting to replace old windows. On a single-pane or leaky window the difference is easy to feel: the cold stream along the glass stops. On Amazon, two brands dominate: 3M, whose kits are sold by the number of windows, and Duck, which sells long rolls and a thicker “Max Strength” film. Here is how they really differ.

Short answer

For one to five windows or a patio door, buy a 3M Indoor Window Insulator Kit: pre-sized sheets and tape, fits three 3×5-foot windows per box (5-window and patio door kits also sold). For a whole apartment or house, the Duck 10-window kit gives two 62-inch × 210-inch rolls and about 166 feet of tape in one box. Pick Duck Max Strength if kids, pets or blinds might poke holes. With either, the tape is the weak point: clean the frame and press it hard.

From the Amazon listings, checked October 29, 2026. Note the Max Strength box has less tape than the standard Duck kit: budget a spare roll of tape for 10 large windows.

Adds 1 inch on every side for overlap. Duck’s rolls are 62 inches wide; wider windows need the 84-inch kit or a patio door kit.

What owners complain about

Most praisedBiggest complaints
3M 3-windowStops drafts; keeps warm sun in on south windowsTape: backing paper that won’t peel, tape that rips during install; value is split
Duck 10-windowEasy to install, especially unrolling along the top tape; rooms feel warmer; clearTape that doesn’t stick for some; film that tears during install
Duck Max StrengthEasy to install; a noticeable difference on old windowsSplit on adhesion, on how thick it really feels and on value

Notice the pattern: the complaints about both brands are mostly about tape. That’s why the install steps below matter more than the logo on the box.

Install steps that stop the tape failing

  1. Clean the frame with rubbing alcohol and let it dry. Dust and kitchen grease are why tape lets go.
  2. Install on a mild day or warm the frame first: tape sticks badly to cold surfaces.
  3. Tape all four sides on the frame, not on the sash that moves, and press it down firmly along its full length.
  4. Peel the backing slowly at a sharp angle. If it tears, start again from the other end of that strip.
  5. Hang the film from the top, then sides, then bottom, pulling lightly. Wrinkles are fine.
  6. Shrink with a hair dryer on high, moving constantly, a few inches from the film. Start at the corners.
  7. Trim the excess with a sharp blade after shrinking.

Renters and fresh paint: the tape can lift loose or new paint when you remove it. Test a small piece in a corner first, and peel it off slowly in spring.

Windows still dripping after the film is on? Condensation between the glass and film usually means a gap in the tape. See what causes window condensation in winter.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3M or Duck window film better?

They work the same way. 3M kits come in pre-counted sizes, such as three or five standard windows and a patio door, with Scotch double-sided tape. Duck sells big rolls for up to 10 or 15 windows and a Max Strength film that Duck says is twice as thick. For many windows, Duck covers more per box; for a few windows or a patio door, a 3M kit is simpler.

Does window insulation film really work?

On single-pane or drafty windows, yes: the film traps a layer of still air and stops drafts around the sash. The U.S. Department of Energy says low-e storm windows can save 10 to 30 percent on heating and cooling costs, depending on the windows you have; shrink film is a cheaper, temporary version of the same idea, so expect smaller savings, mostly on old or leaky windows.

Why does the tape on my window film keep coming off?

Usually the surface was dusty, damp or too cold, or the tape was not pressed down firmly. Clean the frame with rubbing alcohol, install when the frame is above about 50°F, press the tape hard and wait before applying the film.

Can you reuse window insulation film?

No. Once shrunk, the film doesn’t come off in reusable shape. Remove it in spring by pulling the tape slowly at a low angle to protect paint.

Will window film damage paint?

It can lift loose or fresh paint when the tape comes off. Test a small piece of tape in a hidden spot first and remove it slowly in spring. On fresh paint, wait several weeks before taping.
